Are you thinking of transitioning to a plant-based diet but you don't know where to start? There are 100 different ways to go about it and my way may not work for you and that's okay. Keep trying until you find a way that sticks.
For me, I never planned on going plant-based, I just didn't like the taste of meat so I cut it out and became vegetarian. I then slowly cut out milk and eggs and within a year I stopped eating anything derived from animals. You can go the slow approach like me and cut one thing out at a time. Alternatively, you can cut out everything at once and go cold turkey.
You probably have a 100 questions right now and that is okay. We all so when we first start. Hell, I have been plant-based for 5 years now and I am still learning.
Going plant-based can seem complicated, expensive and restrictive to start with, but the goal is to think about what you are adding, not what you are taking away. Once you realise all the benefits of going plant-based, there will be no looking back. Sure there is a learning curve, but you will get past all that and being plant-based will become second nature to you.
Okay so you have been thinking about it for a while and you have decided to go plant-based, now what? Let me go through some basic steps to going plant-based.
Step 1: Think about your mindset and reason why?
Okay so some of you are going to skip over this step, but it is actually really important if you want to stick with it. The more important your reason why is to you, the more likely you are going to stick with eating plant-based.
Here are some common reasons why people go plant-based to get you started.
For your health
To be a better role model for your children
For the environment
For the animals
Start with these basic reasons and go deeper, until you hit a rock-solid why that you don't want to go back on.
Step 2: Do Some Research
If you are reading this blog post I will assume you have already done some research, but do some more. Watch documentaries, youtube videos, blog posts, join FB groups for support. The more research you do the easier it will be when transitioning. This is because you will know what to expect, what you are doing and have the answers when people question your motives.
Step 3: Make a Plan
Like I mentioned above transitioning to a plant-based diet can be done in a number of different ways. But now is the time to decide do you want to do it overnight, over a few weeks, a few months or by making small changes throughout the year? Maybe like me, you will decide to go vegetarian first and see how you go from there.
Step 4: Clear Out The Pantry and Fridge
Depending on how you have decided to transition will depend on how much you need to clear our your fridge and pantry. However, I can tell you right now it is way easier to transition when there aren't animal-based foods around to tempt you. It also gives you room to stock up on lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
If you do have lots of food to clear out, don't just throw it in a bin. Instead give it away to friends, family or donation centres.
Step 5: Pick Out Simple Recipes To Try
I know it can be overwhelming when transitioning, and learning new cooking techniques probably sounds way too hard. So instead look for recipes that are similar to meals you already cook. For example, if you often cook stirfries or curries look for similar plant-based recipes.
Or if you want to try something new, look for recipes that are quick as this usually also means simple. Feel free to check out some of my recipes to get you started.
Step 6: Go Grocery Shopping
Time to make a list of all the ingredients you need to make the easy plant-based recipes you found in step 5. Then go shopping and make sure you stick to your list.
Step 7: Cook
This may sound like a silly step, but often people by ingredients for meals and they never actually cook them. But make sure you cook the meals you picked out.
Step 8: Evaluate
After your first week of so of going plant-based, take a minute to think about what worked for you and what didn't. Keep going with the things that are working, and see if you can change the things that didn't.
I hope this helps you find your way to transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. You may make mistakes along the way but that is okay! After all, we are all human. Just pick back up where you left off and don't beat your self up about it.
